Winter Fall Prevention Safety Tips
-
Check your footwear. Better traction can keep
you more stable on icy surfaces.
-
Strengthen your legs. Regular exercise helps you steady yourself if you slip, mand makes it easier to get back up if you do fall.
-
Keep your shovel and salt in your house if you have a detached garage.
-
Check railings leading to your doors. Will they support you if you fall?
-
Slow down - allow extra time if it's slippery.
-
Avoid reaching or twisting when walking or standing on slippery surfaces.
-
Keep one hand free for balance unless using a walker - wear gloves instead of putting your hands in your pockets.
-
Avoid carrying heavy items.
-
Place a winter grip or rubber tip on canes.
-
Bring a cell phone when you leave the house.
-
Ask for help if you have to walk across an icy sidewalk or parking lot.
