Do you worry that someone you care
about will fall?
If so, you are not alone. A home safety and personal risk
assessment helps prevent falls, so that your loved ones can stay
active and independent.
Through the Sure Steps project, home safety and personal risk assessments are now available for Johnson County Seniors. These assessments identify home safety hazards and personal risk factors that could cause a loved one to fall. The assessments are joint effort between the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Johnson County and the University of Iowa College of Nursing Faculty Practice House Calls. To learn more about these assessments, download the home safety assessment brochure.
To schedule an assessment, call 319-930-2607.
Housing Accessibility Project (HAP)
Do you, or someone you know, need a ramp to provide access to a home? HAP's mission is to provide affordable, flexible, and timely access to Johnson County homes. The project's major focus is building ramps, however adding safely features like bathroom grab bars or stair handrails will be considered on a case-by-case basis. To learn more about HAP, download the brochure, application form, and Median Income Table.
If you have questions about HAP or need a ramp, call 319-631-8083. An Access2Independence intake worker will answer your questions.
HAP is a JCLC project in partnership with Access2Independence, Elder Services, Inc., Capenter's Local 1260, and Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity. These partners are working in cooperation with the Iowa Program for Assistive Technology, Heritage Area Agency on Aging, and the Remodelers Council of the Greater Iowa City Home Builders Association.
Give the gift of home safety.
Nearly two-thirds of falls among seniors happen at home. Give your parents or older relatives, neighbors or friends, a gift of safety from our list of suggestions. Another practical gift idea - give a gift of service. For example, bring the newspaper from the drive to the doorstep, or take out and bring in garbage cans, so that an older adult does not need to walk on ice or snow.
