Housing Accessibility Project (HAP)

Home Accessibility and Maintenance Assistance Programs

These programs offer basic home maintenance, simple wheelchair ramp construction, and installation of home safety items for seniors and those with disabilities.  [printable version]

HAP (Housing Accessibility Project)

Installation of accessibility features enabling Johnson County home owners and renters to move about their homes more easily and retain independence:

Porch and step deconstruction
Simple ramp construction
Grab bar and handle installation
Doorway widening (non-mobile homes)

Services not included: Complex, customizable ramps or major house repairs

Eligibility Guidelines

Residence location: Johnson County
Housing type: home owners, renters, mobile homes
Income: 80% of area median income (view income table)

Costs: Determined on a case-by-case basis

HAP is a coalition of organizations in collaboration with JCLC.  Construction performed by Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity volunteers; ramps designed by members of Carpenters Local 1260; intake service provided by Access2Indepence.

Funding provided through the generous support of the St. Mary's Peace and Justice Committee, First United Methodist Church, and the Pilot Club.

Installation of accessibility features enabling Iowa City mobile home owners or the owners of regular homes to move about their homes more easily and retain independence:

Residence location: Iowa City only
Housing type: home owners, mobile homes
Income: 80% of area median income (view income table)

Costs: No charge for mobile homes; 0% loans for regular homes

Work performed by Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity volunteers.  The entire process may take from a few weeks or months.  Acutal construction will likely occur on a Friday/Saturday.

Funding provided through a Federal grant.


Many Hands - Light Work

Assists elderly and disabled homeowners maintain a safe living environment through assistance with basic maintenance services provided by volunteers:

Light bulb replacement with energy-efficient CFL bulbs
Smoke detector battery replacement
Smoke detectors provided if not currently installed
Furnace filter replacement for most sizes

Services NOT included:
Window and gutter cleaning
Major landscaping
Minor and Major interior repairs

Weatherization

This program provides increased home energy efficiency and an improved health and safety environment:
 
Free before and after energy audit to diagnose a home's performance
Up to $600 in energy improvements
Replacement of primary refrigerator for units over 8 years old

Eligibility Guidelines

Residence location: Johnson County
Housing type: home owners, mobile homes
Income: 200% of Federal povery (view income table)
Cannot have received HACAP Weatherization within last 15 years

Cost: No charge
