Visibility of LGBTQ
Formed in February 2011, the Visibility Action Team provides lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) older adults and their caregivers with information about important aging topics, especially those unique to this group.
Resources and Outreach
The Visibility Action Team has created a VAT brochure and a Resource Guide for LGBTQ older adults to identify and address those unique issues facing the LGBTQ community as we age.

Visibility Action Team members brought filmmaker Stu Maddux and his film Gen Silent to Iowa City in 2011. They developed a needs assessment survey and collected responses from 150 Johnson County residents. In addition, Visibility Action Team members received training from the National LGBT Aging Resource Center on best practices. Johnson County providers serving the aging community attended a training in 2011 at the Iowa City Public Library.
The Visibility Action Team is in the process of becoming a SAGE affiliate program. Founded in 1978, SAGE (Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders) is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT older adults. There are 21 affiliates in 15 states.
We also host social events for older LGBTQ adults in Johnson County, such as the Gay-Straight Alliance Movie Series, which is co-sponsored by the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center.
