Visibility of LGBTQ
The Visibility Action Team (VAT) is one of several volunteer groups that are part of the Johnson County Livable Community for Successful Aging. Formed in February 2011, the Visibility Action Team provides lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) older adults and their caregivers with information about important aging topics, especially those unique to this group.
Resources and Outreach
VAT created VAT brochure and a Resource Guide for LGBTQ for LGBTQ older adults to identify and address those unique issues facing the LGBT community as we age.
VAT members brought filmmaker Stu Maddux and his film Gen Silent to Iowa City in 2011. They developed a needs assessment survey and collected responses from 150 Johnson County residents. In addition, VAT members received training from the National LGBT Aging Resource Center on best practices. Johnson County providers serving the aging community attended a training in 2011 at the Iowa City Public Library.
VAT is in the process of becoming a SAGE affiliate program. Founded in 1978, SAGE (Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders) is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT older adults. There are 21 affiliates in 15 states.
VAT also hosts social events for older LGBTQ adults in Johnson County, such as the Gay-Straight Alliance Movie Series, which is co-sponsored by the VAT and the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center.
The Visibility Action Team typically meets once a month at the Iowa
City/Johnson County Senior Center, 28 S. Linn St., Iowa City. For more information, contact Chair Michelle Buhman by calling 319‑356-5220, or email email@example.com
